Mission Statement
De Novo Dance is a performance collective that uses dance, theater, live music, and technology to create transformative works that engage the body, mind, and spirit. We create original pieces inspired by traditional cultural dance forms such as belly dance, experimentations in music and sound, and butoh dance theater.
Collaborating with non-performers is at the heart of our work: every project is documentary in nature, a reflection of who we are. Exploring audience interactivity and engaging in outreach, we blur the lines between performer and spectator. We aim to shift perception, give pause to our hypersonic lives, and offer space and time for meaningful exchange. De Novo Dance is partnered with HANAC (www.hanac.org), one of New York City’s largest and most successful social service organizations. We are proud to collaborate with seniors from the HANAC Harmony Innovative Senior Center in Astoria, Queens. De Novo Dance’s work has been made possible with support from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department for the Aging, and the Queens Council on the Arts. |
